THE SIX PILLARS OF SELF-ESTEEM … HOW TO IMPROVE YOUR SELF-REGARD

By Dr. Pascale Piron

We all have times that we feel good about ourselves and times we feel low, but when we chronically compare ourselves to others and think we fall short, we can develop mental health challenges and symptoms of depression of anxiety. Self-esteem is what we think and feel about ourselves, and often our self-evaluation starts in childhood. The results of implicit or explicit messages received from parental figures, peers, teachers, siblings, and as we age, our children, our employers and colleagues.

Through psychotherapy, it is possible to understand why this viewpoint developed, how it has influenced our life, and take steps to improve our self-regard.

In The Six Pillars of Self-Esteem by Dr. Nathaniel Branden, https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/79352.Six_Pillars_of_Self_Esteem, he proposes that the premise of increasing our self-esteem starts with developing confidence in our abilities to think, cope, and believing in our right to be happy, and offers the six pillars as guidelines toward these goals.

  • Self-Efficacy confidence in our ability to think

  • Self-Trust/Reliance confidence in our ability to cope with the basic challenges of life

  • Self-Respect confidence in our right to be successful and happy, the feeling of being worthy, deserving, entitled to assert our needs and wants, achieve our values, and enjoy the fruits of our efforts

The Six Pillars

  1. The Specifics of Living Consciously Being receptive to new knowledge and willing to reexamine old assumptions

  2. The Practice of Self-Acceptance Being a friend to ourselves

  3. The Practice of Self-Responsibility Taking responsibility for our own happiness, the achievement of our desires

  4. The Practice of Self-Assertiveness Standing up for ourselves, treating ourselves with respect in all human encounters

  5. The Practice of Living Purposefully Taking responsibility for formulating one’s goals and purposes consciously

  6. The Practice of Personal Integrity Ensure our words and behavior match

When we turn inward to increase our introspection and insight into our functioning, to understand, learn, and grow, we reap the rewards of a new perspective of ourselves, one that knows we deserve to feel good and then we can accept no less than that.
